Sales outlets in Sharjah imposes a tariff on each plastic bag

The sales outlets in Sharjah started imposing a tariff of not less than 25 fils on each plastic bag provided to the customer from Saturday.

The move is part of preparations for a complete ban on single-use plastic bags and materials in the emirate within the next two years. The authorities aim to discourage the use of plastic carry bags as much as possible.

This decision aims to protect the environment from the dangers of plastic pollution and reduce the adverse effects resulting from harmful activities.

It seeks to increase and promote environmental protection and sustainability by reducing the consumption of single-use plastic bags and items.

From January 1, 2024, the Department of Municipal Affairs has decided to ban the trade, manufacture, offer, or import of single-use plastic bags and materials in the emirate.

On the recommendation of Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Executive Council issued a decision to ban single-use plastic bags and materials in the Emirate of Sharjah.
