Emiratisation in UAE: Firms speed up hiring, and training of Emiratis

UAE companies have accelerated the hiring of Emiratis in order to meet the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization's (MoHRE) Emiratization target.

The Ministry mandated that companies with more than 50 employees increase their Emiratisation quota for skilled jobs to 2% by the end of 2022. The target for the private sector has been doubled to 4% by the end of 2023. Firms that fail to hire the required number of Emiratis will be fined Dh6,000 per month.

The new Emirati employees have been assigned to departments such as customer service, academic affairs, student admissions, laboratory, and strategic management.

According to the healthcare firm, applications are also open to Emiratis with relevant experience looking for a role in the health, wellness, and medical education sectors.

What is mandatory Emiratization in the UAE?

Mandatory Emiratization is a policy implemented in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that requires all businesses to employ UAE nationals. This policy was created to ensure that national citizens had access to job opportunities and meaningful employment in their home country.

It also aims to increase the number of UAE nationals working in private sector companies as well as in government agencies.
In order for organizations to comply with mandatory Emiratization, they must have a certain percentage of UAE employees on their payroll. These ratios are based on the size of the company, ranging from 10–100% depending on its size and the nature of its activities.

Companies that do not meet these requirements may be subject to penalties from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MOHRE).

According to recruitment firms, the demand for and salaries of young Emiratis have increased exponentially as a result of the strong push for Emiratization.

Emirates Global Aluminium announced on Monday that it has hired more than 220 UAE nationals, including 100 women, with an average age of 23 years, for the year 2022.

It had a 42 percent Emiratization rate at the end of 2022. EGA employs nearly 1,200 UAE nationals, with over 700 of them under the age of 35.

Emirates Global aims to create 500 new jobs for UAE nationals by 2026, bringing the Emiratization rate to 45 percent.

Emirates NBD, Dubai's largest bank, said it is investing heavily in upskilling, re-skilling, and developing Emiratis through globally recognized training and development programs around the world. The bank is currently looking for Emiratis for digital and advanced analytics positions.

Currently, Emiratis make up roughly 70% of the bank's senior management.
