A driving license in Dubai is an important document that almost all motorists in the city must have. Obtaining a driving license and registering your vehicle can be done from any of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) offices located throughout the city.

With a driving license, road users are legally allowed to drive on UAE roads and highways without fear of arrest or fines for not having one.  

The RTA offers two types of driving licenses, depending on which type of vehicle you want to drive: manual and automatic transmission. Motorists who wish to obtain a manual transmission permit must take lessons at an approved driving school.

The lessons will cover topics such as car maintenance, safety tips, traffic rules, and more. Once they pass their final test at the end of the course they will be issued their license by RTA offices within 24 hours.

Obtaining a driving license in Dubai is one of the top priorities for residents. According to an official count released in July 2020, Dubai had over 2.5 million active driving licenses at the time.

You must have an eye exam at an approved facility, enter your information on the RTA website or app, pay any fines, and apply for renewal. It costs slightly more than Dh400, including the eye test and delivery fees.

The procedure is simple, but there are a few things you should be aware of. Expats may be unable to renew their licenses in some cases, or your document may have been suspended by the authorities.

Is it possible to renew a driving license in Dubai while on a visit visa?

According to the RTA website, those in the UAE on a visit visa are unable to renew the document. This means that if a resident leaves the UAE and returns on a visit visa, he or she will be unable to use the service. To be able to renew the license, the individual must have valid residency.

Can a Dubai-issued license be renewed if the holder has a visa from another emirate?

Residents with visas issued in another emirate can renew their Dubai-issued license, according to the RTA.

What happens if your license is revoked?

If the UAE police cancel or suspend a driver's license after 24 black points, the holder must obtain a NOC letter before applying for an evaluation test. After that, a new training file is opened.
